 Volunteering in the Hospital Sector

April, 2008

Four out of the ten fastest growing jobs today are in health-related careers. Tremendous growth in this field is expected to continue between now and 2014. (CNN Money) In addition, 13 out of the 15 highest paying jobs are in the health professions. (MSN Money) One way to learn more about this field and to determine whether a career in this area might be a match for your interests and skills is to volunteer in your local hospital.

Hospital volunteers must be at least 14 years old and generally work a minimum of 3 or 4 hours each week for at least 10 weeks during the school year. As a volunteer, you will need to interact with a diverse group of people; these may be other volunteers, employees of the hospital, and, of course, the patients; some of these individuals, such as the elderly, young children, or individuals who are handicapped, you may not typically encounter in your daily life.

Students! We are interested in your opinions!

Please send 1-3 paragraph articles on anything interesting you’ve done after school or during the summer that others might like to hear about. Write about camps or programs you’ve attended, courses and classes you’ve taken, jobs or internships you’ve held, and community service activities you have enjoyed.

We’re most interested about activities here in the Boston area, but if you had an especially interesting experience in a program in another part of the US or the world, feel free to send it in. We publish a monthly e-newsletter and want to feature your work!

The deadline for the January newsletter is January 1, so don’t delay.

Authors of accepted articles will receive a $20 gift certificate to their choice of restaurant or coffee shop.
